Privacy policy for the app “Faceless”
Last updated: 22 October 2026
1. In short
Faceless processes your videos and photos exclusively on your device; they are never uploaded anywhere. The app itself does not transmit any data to us and contains no ads, no analytics or tracking tools and no user account. For the optional purchase of the Pro version, the app uses Google Play (see section 7).
2. Controller and contact
The app is provided by the operator of StefanHoffmann.info. Name, postal address and contact details are in the legal notice (imprint): https://stefanhoffmann.info/impressum
Privacy questions: faceless@stefanhoffmann.info
3. What data the app processes
- Videos and photos that you select in the app or share to the app. They may show people and license plates and therefore contain personal data.
- Detecting heads, faces and license plates and pixelating them happens entirely on your device. There is no facial recognition in the sense of identifying people; the app only detects where heads, faces or plates are in the picture.
- The app saves the results in your device storage (folders “Movies/Faceless” and “Pictures/Faceless”). When photos are saved, metadata such as the location (GPS) and the device model are removed.
- So that you can keep editing a video later without analysing it again, the app creates a project for every analysed video in its internal storage, which other apps cannot access. It contains a reference to the original video (the video itself is not copied), the positions of the detected heads, faces and license plates, your changes and settings, small preview images from the video and of the detected people and license plates (for fast scrubbing and selecting, not made unrecognisable) and a cover image in which they are made unrecognisable. Projects stay on your device until you delete them in the app (start screen → “Your videos” → long-press a project → Delete) or uninstall the app.
- Other intermediate results are kept only in memory or in the app’s cache and are deleted by the app or by Android.
- Your settings (e.g. effect and strength) are stored locally only; in the free version also which photos have already been saved without a watermark (as non-reversible short hashes, not the photos themselves). The app is excluded from Android backup.
We have no access to any of this data.
4. Permissions
- Notifications: to show the progress of a running process and to let you know when your video is ready. The app creates these notifications on your device; nothing is transmitted.
- Foreground service and wake lock: so that long processes keep running when you leave the app.
- Storage (Android 8 and 9 only): to save the results in the device storage.
- Purchases through Google Play, internet and network state: these permissions come with Google’s billing library (Google Play Billing) for the Pro purchase. The app itself does not upload anything with them; your videos and photos do not leave the device.
The app only accesses videos and photos that you pick with the Android picker or share to the app.
5. No sharing
We do not pass any data on to third parties. The only exception is the purchase process through Google Play described in section 7; Google may also process data outside the EU.
6. Sharing with other apps
If you pass a result to another app with “Share”, that app’s privacy policy applies from then on.
7. Buying the Pro version
You buy the Pro version through Google Play, either as a monthly subscription or with a one-time purchase. Google handles payment, invoicing, renewal, cancellation and refunds; we do not receive your payment details (e.g. card or account numbers). To know whether you have Pro, the app asks the Google Play app on your device for the purchase status (product, time of purchase, purchase token and whether a subscription is active). You cancel a subscription in Google Play; the app links there (Info → “Manage or cancel subscription”). The app itself does not transmit any data to us. Google’s billing library may send technical diagnostic data about the purchase process (e.g. library version, error codes) to Google. For each purchase, Google provides us with the details needed for accounting and taxes (e.g. order number, date, product, price, country). The legal basis is the performance of the purchase contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) and statutory retention obligations (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR).
8. Google Play
If you install the app from Google Play, Google processes data (e.g. account and device data) under its own responsibility; Google’s privacy policy applies (https://policies.google.com/privacy). If you have allowed Android to share usage and diagnostics data, Google may collect crash reports and technical statistics and provide them to us in aggregated form. The app has no influence on this.
9. Links
If you open a link in the app (e.g. privacy policy or legal notice), your browser starts. The privacy notices of that website apply.
10. Feedback and problem reports by e-mail
With “Feedback & report a problem” the app opens your e-mail app with our address (faceless@stefanhoffmann.info). The app itself sends nothing: you see the message first and decide whether to send it. It is prefilled with technical details that help with troubleshooting (app version, Android version, device model, language and, for problem reports, the technical error description; no videos or photos). If you send the e-mail, we process your e-mail address, the content and any attachments to answer your message and improve the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; for questions about a purchase Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). We delete the e-mails once they are no longer needed for this and no statutory retention obligations apply. Your e-mail provider processes the message under its own responsibility.
11. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. Apart from e-mails you send us, we do not store any data about you. You delete the data on your device by deleting the projects in the app and the result files, or by uninstalling the app.
12. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13.
13. Changes
We update this policy when the app changes. The current version is in the app and at https://stefanhoffmann.info/faceless/datenschutz.html
